Juno-Pluto Aspects in the Birth Chart: When Marriage Goes Deep - and Requires Discernment

Juno is the asteroid of marriage: this part of our birth chart helps us gain information on marriage that helps us a) find the right partner and b) keep a marriage healthy once it's there. In this series of articles, I'll walk you through some of the more interesting combinations for Juno and how you can work with them for maximum happiness.

So, without further ado, let's dive right in!

The Nuts and Bolts: Juno and Pluto

We'll start with a brief explanation of what Juno and Pluto even stand for.

  • Juno: asteroid of marriage and whom you can marry – both for better, and for worse. Also connected to other types of long-term committed partnership (also other associations, like Queen Archetype etc.).

  • Pluto: depth. Truth. Power. Resiliency. The hidden parts of life. The vulnerability that goes so deep it requires immense trust. The trust necessary to go there. This astrological planet also stands for themes around sexuality, secrecy, taboo, and total transformation.

  • Aspect: aspects means that two astrological players are connected in a chart, a.k.a. that they have a line running in between them - or are on similar degrees, regardless of signs (f.e., one is at 16° Virgo, the other at 15° Gemini).

  • Birth Chart: your astrological blueprint for life that never changes and contains both potential for positive and negative experiences, depending on how you choose to act.

Whenever Pluto and Juno walk with one another in someone’s birth chart, we can say one thing for sure: things are about to get interesting – in the best of ways. However, each astrological symbol can bring positive and negative effects, so we’ll cover together what good things you can look forward to, and which bad things to avoid… and how.

It Starts With Discernment

Whenever someone has Juno-Pluto in an aspect in their birth chart, discernment before the altar is key. You’re not meant for everyone. Not only that, but committed relationships such as marriage change you… and that change includes you becoming a bit more like your partner. If that partner is a wonderful person, that’s great! If they aren’t, marriage isn’t going to fix them, but it will drag you down to some extent instead. This is a far more prominent reality for people with Juno-Pluto aspects.

So, “have discernment” sounds like a wonderful phrase for the Fortune Cookie. What does this mean concretely? It means to prioritize truth before trust, and to go deeper than you think you need to when it comes to understanding your partner. It also looks like thinking – truly thinking – about future consequences of having someone with Behavior X or Character Y in your life.

Discernment means to trust the pattern, not the words or singular actions. People can have wonderful intentions, but intentions don’t reflect capacity. Looking at both is key.

Discernment means to acknowledge the reason why something happened, without letting it become the excuse for the what that happened, or unduly absolving the other person of natural consequences for their actions.

Discernment means to be honest with yourself first, without becoming mistrustful, jaded, or cynical about the other person, or letting chemistry or the rosy-red glasses, necessity, or potentiality blind you to the truth that’s there in front of your nose.

And, again, it means to keep a logical outlook when it comes to the future and think through how certain life plans, lifestyles, behavioral patterns, etc. impact you in 5, 10, or 15 years, and whether that’s truly something you want to handle, can handle, or should be handling then. This is particularly important when it comes to long-term plans such as wanting/not wanting kids, plans for life abroad, etc.

Love Goes Deep

With Juno-Pluto aspects in your birth chart, any marriage is going to go extremely deep for you, which is why the discernment piece from the get-go is so important. The love goes deep. The trust goes deep. The commitment goes deep.

That depth can be life-giving and can allow you to thrive and bloom in a way you’ve never had before: Juno-Pluto aspects can prime someone to meet a person who accepts them AS THEY ARE, with warts and all, to the deepest possible level. This is both beautiful and powerful, as it allows someone to heal, to become who they truly are, to step into their power, and to gain a quality of life that is unmatched. Juno-Pluto aspects, when they go well, are extremely powerful forces of good for the individual. However, that depth can be a pitfall when you’re with the wrong person, which is why discernment is such an important point.

Juno-Pluto aspects in the natal chart can make a marriage extremely resilient, as the partners tend to be extremely committed to one another. Even the types of crises other couples break under, couples with this combination can survive. In part, this is because people with Juno-Pluto aspects commit absolutely. In good times, and in bad times – that’s a literal promise that is lived literally.

Keeping a Relationship Healthy: Honoring Trust and Avoiding Secrecy

Even though people with Juno-Pluto aspects in their chart have a capacity for extreme resiliency of their marriages, that doesn’t mean it’s foolproof. Assuming that the marriage is between two partners who love each other (and aren’t abusive or otherwise unhealthy for one another), there are three major potential pitfalls that can seriously harm the relationships: two we’ll talk about right now: trust and openness.

Pluto is the planet of absolute truth and also, on the other opposite end, our tendency to keep secrets. With Juno, asteroid of marriage, aspecting Pluto, truth and secrets have the capacity to majorly affect the marriage, which usually plays out in a far higher than usual need for truth and transparency. The people I’ve worked with who have this combination would have stayed with someone even had they murdered someone, cheated on them, or robbed them blind. What broke their marriages were lies. With this combination, lack of truth – by omission or lies – can be the death blow for the marriage, even if it’s “otherwise healthy.” On the positive side, there literally is an extreme amount of commitment even in the situations that other couples wouldn’t survive, hence the lies.

People with Pluto-Juno aspects can forgive a lot (especially if Neptune is involved, which is almost always the case for people who have this combination and were born in the last 100 years). But when they feel like their trust was mishandled or deliberately used or broken – even if the “thing itself” that broke it wasn’t “that bad,” it creates the kind of wound they find it hard to get over with.

This means that handling trust – be it by keeping private things private, or just by doing your absolute best to never go below the belt in your relationship – is the absolute key for relational health, with a far more extreme consequence (for better and for worse) than is the case for other people. Also, if someone feels like they can trust you, the biggest crises and screw-ups can be forgiven and forgotten eventually. Part of retaining trust is always honesty and transparency.

Boundaries, Possessiveness and Exclusivity

The third theme that can massively impact a relationship when one of the individuals has Juno-Pluto aspects in their birth chart is relational boundaries. Now, people with Juno in this combination tend to be very all-or-nothing: if they fully trust their spouse, they could and would put their very lives into the spouse’s hands with very little anxiety or hesitancy, if any. They tend to want full trust with their partner in all ways that are possible, nothing held back. Unless there are massive reasons (traumatic past, pre-existing legal or financial situations, etc.), they do give everything, even to the point that other people wouldn’t consider wise.

However, that trust doesn’t always extend to the relations their partner has with other people. People with Juno-Pluto aspects generally thrive in exclusive marriages (even if dating non-exclusively was fine in the past) and deal with strong feelings of possessiveness… which isn’t necessarily bad or unhealthy, depending on how they respond to said feelings! But, because of that, strong boundaries with third parties and transparency with life in general is needed. Lack thereof can lead to strong paranoia and issues in the relationship.

The Good News: Ride or Die

People with Pluto-Juno aspects in their chart become – and marry their – ride-or-dies. They are extremely committed to showing up in the situations where showing up is the hardest and to helping people through the kind of times that have others jump ship or conveniently disappear. They are the emergency contact and expect their partners to be the same.

Having this combination in your chart also means that transformation (Pluto) and marriage (Juno) bring the potential for an always self-renewing love and commitment. That spouses empower each other and step more into their own power because they know each other. They can become each other’s support systems in a beautiful way that’s more potent than words can express.

Having this combination in your birth chart can mean that your relationship survives all storms in life and truly becomes “till death do us part.” But the right partner is key – so please be discerning.

Some Tips:

While who you marry is, of course, up to you, here is a list of qualities I would look for as far as the discernment piece goes.

Who You Should Marry

  • Someone who’ll take your secrets to the grave

  • Someone you have great sexual chemistry with

  • The person with the MOST amount of integrity and personal responsibility you’ve ever met

  • Someone not scared of taboo subjects or hard truths

  • Someone who can take a No or take criticism, but also doesn’t bend over backward for others (no people pleaser)

  • Someone willing to go get help should they really need it (such as help to get out of addiction, etc.), who’s willing to do what it takes to save the relationship should it ever be in peril

  • Someone who wants to know you inside out, from what you ate in school when you were six to the biggest trauma you had to a happy memory last week to your exes and what they did right in bed

  • Someone willing to stand in their own power and support you in yours

  • Someone determined

  • Someone who can handle intensity, big emotions, transformation, and dark stories about the past

  • Someone who knows you at your worst and doesn’t walk away

  • Someone who shows you their deepest depths

  • Someone you can laugh with all day, every day, about potentially everything

  • Someone who continuously calls you out on your bs, and wants you to do the same for them

  • Someone you can get show your non-polished side to

  • The most honest person you know

  • Someone safe

  • Someone committed to you who lets you take your space and doesn’t dominate your life

I may be biased, but this is one of the best aspects to have – if you handle it with awareness.

Pluto is a planet of growth, soul, evolution, and sexiness. With this connected to your asteroid of marriage, you can have a partner that can handle it all. There’s no dark that’s too dark for them, no wound or scar on you that turns them off. As a matter of fact, this is the type of partner that will love you for your wounds too, and sees the strength it takes to live with your past.

There are no taboos with Juno-Pluto. Whatever you need to talk about as a couple, you can handle it. This is the type of relationship that’s unbreakable, close, that creates powerhouse individuals… and has people naked on the level of your souls.

Did I mention that it’s also really, really sexy?

Juno-Pluto relationships foster transformation and call for integrity. Whatever obstacle you face, it will make your relationship more beautiful. However you may change as an individual over time, your partner will support you and match that.

It’s a relationship that rewards truth and authenticity. It truly is “until death do us apart.”
