Explaining Asteroids - An Introduction, Compilation, and List of Resources

One of the coolest things in astrology - both for beginners AND professionals - is working with asteroids. Why? Because they're easy to apply in real life (beginner-friendly) AND add nuance and specificity to interpretation that brings a professional's reading to the next level. Regardless of where you fall on the spectrum of astro-know-how, this article will explain a little bit about that - and lead you to even more content for deeper knowledge!

What Are Astrological Asteroids?

In astrology, "asteroid" is the umbrella term for any small-ish heavenly body that's not Pluto (because we're rebel enough to refuse astronomy's reclassification of Pluto, as much as we respect astronomers far and wide). Even if the astronomical correct term for the heavenly body is different - such as dwarf planet, centaur, comet, minor body, etc. - astrologers just use "asteroid" for all of it. It makes things easy enough for our purposes, as astrological asteroids work a little different than astrological planets in the charts, so the distinction is about the practical application, rather than scientific specificity.

So, what's the difference? In a nutshell - planets cover a plethora of topics while asteroids get specific!

In astrology, a planet stands for roughly 10,000 different things and symbolizes a variety of different topics - from "core themes," such as love (Venus) to "fringe symbolism," such as cosmetics (also Venus). An asteroid only covers very few topics (usually less than 10) - but that also means that they allow us to get really specific answers to quite specific questions. This makes asteroids extremely useful and powerful in astrology, as well as practical and applicable.

Okay, moving on.

The Goddess Asteroids

The main asteroids astrologers work with are Chiron, astrological asteroid of healing, wounds, and wisdom derived from facing adversity; and the so-called Goddess Asteroids, which were a) the first asteroids ever found by astronomers, and b) all named after female deities of the Greek and Roman panetheon - hence the name.

 These asteroids are:

  • Vesta: our focus, life-priorities, matters of the sacred, Core Gifts, and returning home to ourselves.

  • Pallas: our uniqueness in thinking and talents, strategy, how we gain success, practicality, neurodivergence.

  • Juno: commitment, leadership (esp. in co-leadership), marriage, life-partnership, using power for purpose.

  • Ceres: core needs, parenting-related endeavors, love languages, how we give care to others.

As you can see, these asteroids speak to massive topics that are active for all human beings - and incredibly important to learn about.

So, where are your goddess asteroids? Subscribers get a guide on how to pull up your chart with your asteroids!

Fun fact: Another astrologer-favorite as far as "asteroids" go is Lilith, which is not a goddess asteroid.
