Total Eclipse of the Heart: Total Solar Eclipse in Leo (08/12/2026)

On August 12th, 2026, the third eclipse of 2026 – and the first eclipse after the North and South Node changed signs and started a new chapter of soul-development – is taking place. Let’s jump right in!

Astro-Terms

What is a Solar Eclipse?

A Solar Eclipse is a new moon that’s aligned so perfectly with Earth that the Sun is hidden by the Moon as per our own perspective. Astrologically, these are times of new beginnings and (re-)starts, times of a new dawn, new hope, new projects and ideas. These are times of a new you.

Eclipses always come in pairs or triplets (this one is one of 2) and their influence lasts for about 2 weeks on either side of the exact dates each. They also have ripple effects that we may feel for six months to come.

This “season” of eclipses is a time of change and heightened emotions, where life seemingly speeds up and processes that were already underway are massively sped up. Things smoldering underneath the surface suddenly come above the surface, and secrets are revealed. We figure out what we want… and life suddenly throws us opportunities and curveballs that we did not expect.

The Nodes

All eclipses orient themselves around 2 points in the sky that are exactly opposite at all times: the Lunar Nodes (also called The Nodes). These points have just recently moved into Aquarius (North Node) and Leo (South Node), bringing a whole new flavor to the eclipses that we’re experiencing – and one we haven’t felt for the past 9 years. The event of the nodes in these signs lasts for the next 1 ¾ years, until 2028, and for a more thorough breakdown, you can read about it here (or in a link at the bottom of the article).

So, what does that mean? This means that this eclipse truly is a new beginning in more ways than one: as a Solar Eclipse, it sparks a new dawn, a new development, a new opportunity within ourselves, a new chapter of growth and self-understanding… and, with the corresponding axis having moved into the signs just days ago (July 27th), it truly is an all new energy in more ways than one.

Fortunately, we got a little bit of – not a preview, exactly, but more of a stepping stone – with the Solar Eclipse of February 17th, 2026. This won’t correspond exactly, nor will the themes you saw playing out in February of 2026 come back in the same way... but it's important to note that there is a connection between those two themes, in a way that cousins raised in different generations are still connected.

Total Eclipse of the Heart: Solar Eclipse in Leo

Leo is the sign of the heart, both physically – as astrology actually corresponds to our physical bodies in really cool ways – and emotionally. With a Solar Eclipse in Leo, it’s time to take heart, listen to your heart, have courage (courage comes from cœur, the French word for heart), and let your heart lead the way. Choose your heart, not your head.

Which leads me to a very important note: There are currently a whole lot of conversations about whether “following one’s heart” is good or bad advice. This conversation is rooted (in my opinion) in the fact that some people don’t know how to differentiate the voice of their heart from the voice of their ego, or in some cases, their emotional whims in general. I’m not advocating for people to run their lives solely based on the latter two things, as that can truly become damaging with time. But the voice of the heart differs from the voice of our egos or our run-of-the-mill desires: it is rooted in love. It is a voice you hear best when you slow down (and, might I suggest, first have a cookie or otherwise make sure you aren’t currently hangry – or sleep-deprived, or in need of immediate action to fulfil other physical or medical needs, etc.). It is not revealed in Ayahuasca; it is revealed in being with yourself with no influences or distractions other than yourself. It is also constant over time. The heart is also wise in a way our heads and capacity for logic aren’t. And your heart often doesn’t give you a choice when you ignore it for too long.

This eclipse is a time when whatever you ignored in your heart becomes a force you can no longer suppress. Sometimes, the things we wish we wouldn’t feel take a life of their own and thus start to run the show… but more often, life takes the reins when a desire rooted in our highest good continues to be set aside, only for you to do the opposite.

You don’t want to do the job – it’s soul-sucking and feels like it’s slowly killing you from the inside out. You can’t do this for long anymore. Suddenly, you’re given a new job opportunity… or you’re fired, the choice taken from you. Under eclipses, things like that are incredibly common (with new opportunities happening as well, like the fired person finding a new job relatively quickly after). With the benefit of hindsight, you realize this was the most blessed development of your life, even if it wasn’t fun in the moment.

You have the nagging sense that your partner is cheating, but don’t want to look – don’t want it to be true – are willing to pretend nothing is amiss. Suddenly, the proof stares you in the face in the form of a conversation, meeting the Other Person, bags packed by the door when you get home. After a brief period of grief, you realize that this is the best thing that has ever happened to you.

Eclipses bring the change we’ve been resisting, and they often “take matters into their own hands” where we’ve resisted too much. That doesn’t mean we don’t have agency or options anymore; we do. But with an eclipse (season) like this, what are hearts are leading us to do – from a place of love, from what’s in our highest good, from divine guidance itself – is either done by us, or handed to us in some way, shape, or form. We can choose the details, though.

Another incredibly important piece in this (one I hope you picked up on already) is this: whatever happens in this eclipse season? It’s going to be good for you, even if you can only see the good in hindsight.

Courage

This eclipse season, it pays off to be brave… and it pays off to be true to who you are, deep down. Amplified by Jupiter in the same sign, this eclipse is all about doing what’s hard and right: especially where other people can see (and potentially disapprove, if disapproval could be an option). It’s time to let the real you shine through, but you don’t necessarily need a big stage for this if that’s daunting! Letting people see who you truly are isn’t about the audience size; it’s about the realness you bring. If it's just one person, or three… if it’s real, then that’s what counts.

Sometimes, it’s easier to show your real you in front of a crowd where everyone’s anonymous to you, than in front of a small group of people you really care about (though – this differs from person to person, I certainly don’t feel the same way. But many other people do, especially with social media… if this is you, all the best to you!). This eclipse asks you to be you, where that’s maybe a challenge to you, so if you’re used to big crowds… maybe it’s time to ask yourself how real you are with the inner circle around you.

And for some people, this eclipse might absolutely mean stepping in front of a bigger crowd to bring your gifts to them. That’s great, too – and certainly has an auspicious influence from this eclipse. But what matters is that it’s real, not how many people see it.

Joy

The third theme of this Solar Eclipse is joy. Anything that brings you joy – from a hobby, to a creative endeavor, to a life purpose that brings joy to you, to your friends and family, to your romantic relationship, or hanging around with the children in your circle – is highlighted intensely right now. This is a time to plant creative seeds and to see them bloom, too. This is a time to let your hair down and go to a party (or, if you’re introverted, to invite two people over, take that random object on the counter, and pretend it’s your microphone while singing along with ABBA songs on a loop! It’s fun!). This is a time to tap into what allows you to enjoy life and to laugh about the world until you feel lighter.

What gives us joy is unique to us. Truthfully, we move through times when a certain thing that always gave us joy holds no appeal anymore – and this right now, is not a time to force us back into that mold – but if there’s something you used to do that lit you up that’s especially appealing to you, it might be a good thing to revisit your past.

A note for people who aren’t having a good time: just because joy is a theme of this eclipse, doesn’t mean that this entire time will be 100% sunshine and rainbows: life happened before the eclipse came in, and the 2026 astrology is particularly intense so nothing going on this year is all “light and love” (astrologers a hundred years ago pointed to this decade as a “!!!” time… and I want you to think about all the stuff that happened last century.) But happiness isn’t just something that lies in your circumstances, it’s also about you choosing to do things that give you joy, no matter what’s going on around you.

Or, to say it with Kresley Cole in my favorite quote of all time:

“Sometimes, people think that happiness will simply fall into their laps. You have to aspire to it. And sometimes, you have to seize it when it’s kicking and screaming.”

Get that joy. Catch it like it owes you money and insulted your Mama.

All jokes aside, this is a time when choosing a few hours of joy recharges you so much that it allows you to deal with the world that went dark, even if joy is running from you, screaming bloody murder… Laughter is medicine for the soul. Bring it in, even if it’s hard, and it’ll bring good fruit for the next six years.

Obviously, this only goes for joy-bringing actions that aren’t inherently dangerous to you or other people, or reckless to the point that, if Common Sense were a person, it’d start crying. I take 0 responsibility for what YOU are responsible for. Thank you.

A New You

The last theme of this eclipse, before we step into the Personal Advice, is this: The eclipse is about you. You, as an individual. You, as your sense of self, self-confidence, and self-worth. You, as in be the star, Sunshine! Special Snowflake Syndrome Should Better Strike Again! (That should have been the name of the eclipse… but Total Eclipse of the Heart was just too fitting, and a pun too good to pass up. What can I do?)

This eclipse is a moment of personal growth that doesn’t require work or therapy or any of the other efforts we associate with that word – but natural epiphanies. Realizing how far you came. Having a breakthrough while doing something you maybe don’t even associate with personal growth. Understanding yourself in a new way you didn’t have access to before.

This may even be a time when you discover/use one of your inborn gifts and talents in a new way.

Allow a new sense of self to emerge – and don’t be bummed if it doesn’t appear as big at first, this type of thing plays out over the next 6 months… and self-development (the kind that lasts) usually only becomes apparent when you have some distance and look back on things.
