What does having Uranus in the fourth house mean when it’s in your birth chart (natal chart)? This article explains what this means and how to work with it – and it’s the sister article to Shaking Foundations of Life: Uranus in the 4th House Transit. So, if you want to look at what happens with that, this article is for you.

Obviously, this is a generalized article applicable to all birth charts and signs involved. If you’d like a tailored-to-you, complete, and comprehensive analysis of your chart, you can book one here.

So, what is Uranus? This is the planet of change, liberation, and upheaval. It tends to bring innovation and (sometimes) instability to whatever it touches. The fourth house is the house of the home, family, and private life. That makes this combination quite special – but not to worry! This can be a wonderful placement as well.

Before we go further, let’s look at dates really quickly to make sure this is the right article for you.

Dates:

If you were born within the timeframes listed below and have the Rising Sign noted, Uranus sits in your 4th house in your birth chart. Note: there are always one or two years in which Uranus is technically in two signs as it’s moving back and forth between the old and new signs. For exact dates, further research is recommended.

Uranus in the 4th House: Unconventional Home

Uranus is the planet that symbolizes the unconventional. Now, unconventional doesn’t have to mean taboo or bad (though it can, of course, do that, too!), and in the fourth house, this applies to both your physical home – growing up or in the present moment – and your family of origin/of your own making. For example, people with Uranus in the 4th house from birth usually experience at least one event of extreme upheaval when it comes to the place they live in, whether that’s an apartment, house, the city they reside in, or even the continent. This could be a sudden necessity to move, or a significant event regarding your home that impacts you. In some cases, we also see natives who have a family that’s moving around a lot – because their family works in a circus, is full of musicians taking you along on tours, or is a military family who has to move through some military bases. Of course, a divorce leading to you living in multiple places could also fit this pattern.

The theme of unconventional homes doesn’t necessarily stay contained to childhood, but it is the most significant timeframe as Uranus doesn’t just create change, it asks you to be in charge of your own life and make the decisions that work best for you, regardless of what anyone else thinks (and that’s something we don’t get to do in childhood – to this level, at least). As you grow up and become an adult, this may give you experiences of having a home that’s very different than what others have – like living in a Winnebago, or having a very unique living situation with roommates, or having a very eclectic style when it comes to how you make your own home.

It can also lead to you making a home in ways that is very different from what you’re used to, but otherwise not that unconventional – choosing to put down roots when your childhood was moving from one place or another, for instance – or to have a relationship to the topic of “home” that is maybe a bit out of the norm: whether that’s the person who just uses their home as a storage unit and constantly lives in hotels, or someone who makes their home their entire life in some ways. You usually need either a lot more or a lot less stability from your home life than other people have, depending on your unique chart and life experiences.

None of this is bad or wrong, but with Uranus here, it had better be what you really want and need – because Uranus here creates liberation and a journey of individuation when we need the push to step out of someone else’s ideas of how we should live.

Now, to your family.

Unconventional Family

As stated, your family is one of the strongest themes Uranus impacts when it’s in this placement… and it makes it quite unconventional, but not necessarily in a harmful way. For example, your “unconventional” family could have consisted of homicide detectives who married each other – that’s nothing bad, but it does radically impact the way you’d grow up and what sort of friendships and relationships your family has with outsiders, and the parents of your kid friends.

Of course, your unconventional family could also consist of – real-life example – a gender-neutral surrogate/parent married to a woman who doesn’t want kids, using the ovum and having a co-parenting agreement with their lesbian roommate who’s also married to another woman who doesn’t want kids (and paternal DNA from a friend willing to donate).

Or, having an unconventional family could mean having lots of multiples in your family, such as twin/triplet/quadruplet siblings, or being one yourself. One of the people I know with this placement was actually adopted as a baby, which is also unique enough that this fits this placement.

These are things that make your family different, and that impact your upbringing quite a bit – and this potential for differences is not a complete or comprehensive list. What’s noteworthy is that “unconventional” doesn’t mean bad, but it does make you stick out in some was – and that (when you have Uranus in the 4th house) impacts you in a significant, often positive (but obviously, not always positive) way. It teaches you from a very young age that you don’t have to fit the mold and that it’s okay to be an individual, to be unique, and that actually, you have to be because there’s no other option other than to be yourself. There can be quite a clash between the ways that other people do this thing called life, and the way your family does: and your allegiance has to go to one or another, there’s no real sitting on the fence (that works). It also shows you what you really need, one way or another, because you see so many different models of home and family and have more “options” in your mind of what a happy life could and should be – for you. It’s really important that you tailor things to you as you grow up and have those choices.

The unfortunate negative potential

Now, as I said: this can be a positive placement for sure. But astrology is neutral, so there are also some negative possibilities here that some people (not everyone!!!) encounter. For example, parents or other important family members who are suddenly lost or flake on you, who are very inconsistent (by choice or circumstance) about whether they are in your life, or who are struggling in ways that destabilize you in childhood. Sometimes, there could have been a family that broke apart before you were born, sometimes, there are significant things passed down through DNA that impact you, and sometimes, there are massive changes in your family to the negative that you’d like to opt out of, but can’t. Divorce is something that may impact your family (not necessarily you!!!!), be it because of someone’s previous divorce before you were born, someone divorcing during your lifetime, or the fear of this thing happening that rules the household. Sometimes, people with this placement grow up raised by people who aren’t their biological parents, or even in foster care, as well, though again – not always. In some cases, family members are also unique in ways that are hard to deal with – or that negatively impact you – as a kid, such as bipolar disorder and addiction that aren’t treated. That being said: this is the worst-case scenario segment and NOT something that everyone experiences.

Reinventing Home and Family

Uranus inspires us to be radically different. For people with this planet in the 4th house, this often leads to life choices that usually fall into two camps: the first camp is those who want to make the family of their own making radically different from what they’re used to – grew up always moving? Let’s become super-stable. Grew up with 12 siblings? Let’s have one kid only. Grew up with no siblings? Let’s have five kids. And so on.

The other camp is the one that takes the principle of unconventional families and makes it their own, taking their own experience as permission to get really creative and make what they think is right and works for them, regardless of what others think. This is great, as long as it’s actually working for everyone: stay flexible and adaptable, should time prove that it doesn’t work as well as you thought. Whenever we bring the spirit of rebellion against to the table, especially to human relationships, we have to be careful that we don’t get close-minded to what actually worked about the systems (your own past/society) we try to separate from. Because things are rarely so black and white that something was universally bad.

I’ve also seen a higher likelihood for people with this placement to choose adoption, donation of gene material, and fostering kids to make a family – not exclusively, of course, there are plenty of people with this placement who have biological children.

Now, all of this, of course, only applies when you choose to have a family of your own. Many people with Uranus here make this choice, but many also don’t. And that’s perfectly fine.

Family as Friends

With this astrological event, family can often become friends as the years go by, with the lines blurring to some extent (of course, this is only applicable when the family relationships are healthy – unhealthy relationships with family probably don’t experience that effect, and downright abusive relationships may require a no contact solution). Similarly, friends can also become part of your family – chosen family, or literally (by marrying into your family in some way).

Private Life:

Last but not least, this is the house of private life – where you have/wish to have privacy. With Uranus here, you’re perhaps very particular about whom you let into your inner world, or do something with your inner world that’s radically different and challenging societal/family norms in some ways. Sometimes, there’s an inconsistency here as people move through phases of opening up (sometimes maybe even more than they want to) and then closing down completely. Technology and privacy may become a major theme as well, though that depends on the individual and their chart.

There is so much more to say… but we’ll leave this here. Come in for a reading if you’d like a more comprehensive and complete analysis of astrology that’s tailored to you and your unique chart! Conclusion:

With Uranus in this placement, you may have a greater or lesser need for stability than the people around you, as the way your family and home life shape(d) and support(ed) you impacts you quite a bit. That being said, you have all the choices to make this a great placement and part of your life if you’re not afraid to create the changes you need to make and to stay true to who you are at your core. Your family, certainly, will never be boring – and their genius can impact you in positive ways.
