The second Mercury Retrograde of 2026 is upon us on June 29th, 2026: and it’s in the sign of the heart, the home, and families. Mercury Retrograde in Cancer lasts until July 23rd, 2026, and is going to get interesting - including because we have a note of caution that's necessary this time around, plus tips on what you can do to help yourself. So, let's jump right in!

Note of Caution (And What You Can Do):
As this Mercury Retrograde is closely affecting Uranus, planet of surprises and accidents, in Gemini, sign of traffic, travel, and communication, this is a prime time for travel and traffic-related hiccups (only this strong as Uranus has recently changed into Gemini and is still "stabilizing"). This means that we'll have to be extra-careful during this Mercury Retrograde, though common-sense caution is enough.
What you can do:
For example, driving with more care than usual and avoiding the types of driving behaviors we already know we shouldn't do (speeding, skipping seatbelts, DUI, driving when exhausted/overly emotional, being in a vehicle that's got more warning lamps than a disco lightbulbs, etc.) is a really good idea right now. So is defensive driving: You might be a good enough driver; but the other people on the road are just as affected by the astrology as you are - and they might not be as gifted as you when it comes to all things steering wheel. Making sure you can account for other people's mishaps is a great idea during this time.
Also, things like taking tech or logistical hiccups into account when planning something important, adding bigger time buffers for shipping or travel, and having backup plans when out and about are also immensely helpful.
Timeframe:
While these effects hit us the worst during the 3 weeks of the actual retrograde, the shadow periods (that bracket the retrograde and show the build up and dissipation of the energy) also hit us a bit more intensely than usual, thanks to Uranus still getting its bearings. Please be more careful during all of June and July, and the beginning of August right now.
Now, this Mercury Retrograde isn't just about that - actually, there's many, many big themes intertwined with this Mercury Retrograde, so stay tuned and keep reading. Okay, let's get back to the nitty-gritty!

Dates:
Pre-shadow: June 1st onward.
Event: June 29th – July 23rd, 2026.
Post-shadow: until August 9th, 2026.
As stated, the themes will build and dissipate in the shadow periods bracketing the retrograde, with the Mercury Retrograde itself lasting ca. 3 weeks and showing the peak time of intensity. But for those of you who don't know yet... what is a Mercury Retrograde?
What is a Mercury Retrograde?
If you know this already, you can skip here.
What is Mercury?
Mercury is a planet in astrology that stands for communication, trade, commerce, logistical endeavors, travel, thinking, learning, and related activities. It is in retrograde 3-4 times per year, which happen to be interesting times, because…
What is a Retrograde?
… a retrograde is a time when a planet’s “normal modus operandi” is disturbed or rather, turned inward. Imagine an extrovert suddenly feeling drawn to mostly spend time by themselves so they can work through some inner things that popped up and find a resolution: that’s what retrogrades feel like. They’re making all of us more drawn to our internal worlds, and they can feel – as this example hopefully shows – a bit foreign, since we’re often drawn to do things in ways we usually wouldn’t. The world isn’t as it usually is, either. And that feels odd. Specifically, everything the retrograding planet signifies works slightly differently, which can be a blessing or a problem – depending on us, the situation, and the astrological context itself.
Mercury Retrogrades
So, putting it all together, Mercury Retrogrades are times when we (re)think decisions, when logistics and technology are more likely to turn haywire, and when events force us to rework plans on bigger or smaller scales. Mercury Retrogrades always last for 3 weeks and happen 3-4 times a year (3 times in 2026), and the way we process Mercury Retrogrades highly depends on multiple things:
1) The actual astrology of the retrograde (that’s different every time and every year).
2) The way you interact with the astrology (since we all have choices and can choose to go with the energy in healthy ways or to try and fight it tooth and nail… which will make it much worse for you in the long run).
3) Your birth chart and natal configuration: for example, people with Mercury Retrograde in their birth charts tend to find this energy less intense than people with Mercury not in retrograde. Which personal points are hit by the specific retrograde also greatly affects how this event plays out for you individually.
If you’re interested in all of that, keep reading this article and book a reading for more information on your personal astrology.
Now, to the themes of this Mercury Retrograde specifically - beyond the note of caution already shared with you.

A Retrograde Like No Other: Midwifing Change
One of the strongest features of this Mercury Retrograde in Cancer is actually the influence that it has on the overall configuration of other astrological events, mainly:
The end of Jupiter in Cancer
The end of the Nodes (axis of destiny) in Pisces and Virgo
The beginning of Uranus in Gemini (a 7 ½ year-long event that just kicked off)
All articles linked here are repeated at the end of the article for your convenience.
For all those events (that are huge on their own, welcome to 2026), Mercury Retrograde plays the role of – for lack of a better word – a midwife. It evens our way in or enhances the changes that are kicking off for us individually. Let’s discuss.
Walking Hand in Hand to the End
Jupiter in Cancer
As Mercury turns retrograde in Cancer, it sits right next to Jupiter, planet of greatness, blessings, children, spouses, money, and the journeys we take to wisdom. Jupiter in Cancer is a major event that started in June of 2025 and will only last a day after Mercury turns retrograde: June 30th, 2026, Jupiter ends its journey in this sign and starts a new one in Leo.
But here’s the deal. Whenever Mercury accompanies a planet as it ends a year-long (or multiple-year-long) journey through a sign, something that takes more than a decade before it happens again (as Jupiter needs 12 years to come full circle), Mercury becomes a sort of midwife for the end. And the agent that allows us to tie up loose ends, understand things from a different and higher perspective, to close out whatever needs closure.
Until July 23rd, Mercury Retrograde in Cancer will aid us in making lemonade from the lemons of our past with Jupiter in Cancer, wherever this astrological event handed lemons to us: we’ll understand the larger context of whatever it was that went on in our lives since June 2025 and transform it to something beautiful. With Jupiter also being a planet connected to many good things, such as blessings, Mercury Retrograde will also allow us to further plan ahead and see whatever it is we want to/can take with us into the future.
Jupiter in Cancer is its own event: if you’d like to read up on which themes affect this Mercury retrograde, refresh your mind here. Jupiter next enters Leo, which opens up a whole new slew of personal and collective themes and journeys: Mercury staying in Cancer helps us ease our way into the new energy, since the familiar, soothing, nurturing qualities of Cancer even our path here.

Release and Regurgitation
South Node in Virgo
The next thing this Mercury Retrograde “midwifes” has to do with the Lunar Nodes. In summary, there is an axis of two interconnected points in the sky called the Lunar Nodes (or “Nodes” for short), which is nicknamed the Axis of Destiny. As you can imagine by that nickname, it literally deals with fate as we understand it, soul-led growth and events, big changes, and other events and lessons that need to be integrated. (It’s also the axis responsible for where the eclipses take place each year.) Part of this axis is one point (North) of what we’re growing towards. The other part, the South Node, is the part we’re building on and detoxifying. Each part of the axis, a.k.a. Node, has a ruler that influences it. Currently, Mercury is one of the rulers… which, in summary, means that Mercury affects the South Node, hence that this Mercury Retrograde affects the South Node.
So, what does that mean? It means the entire 3 weeks of this event give us an element of fate being at play. This is particularly potent as Jupiter – who we just noted leaves Cancer for Leo and is involved in this Mercury Retrograde – is also a ruler of the Nodes: another thing that ties this Mercury Retrograde to the theme of Big Things Being Afoot. So, this event has a very strong tie to themes around higher guidance, destiny at play, and fate having a hand in things (in whatever way you believe this to be possible… and quite a couple more ways than even that).
What matters here most is that the South Node is directly affected by Mercury Retrograde, so the part of the Nodes that has to do with releasing obstacles, detoxification, and closing out the past. Mercury Retrograde, which is already about aiding the end (thanks to it aiding Jupiter close out Cancer), is doing this doubly so thanks to its tie to the South Node.
But things are even more potent than that. Mercury Retrogrades are always about reconsidering and redoing things in our lives. They are course corrections, which are especially prominent when the Nodes of Destiny are involved and giving things, let’s just say, high-intensity stakes. But with Mercury being the ruler of the South Node, our focus is much more on the past and present we already live in, rather than what’s coming next.
It poses the question(s): what is it that you’re building your future or fate on (that is already there)? What skills from the past are waiting to be upleveled or dusted off to be used for your future? Where is your heart guiding you towards something you already knew, but forgot? Where do you need to process your past to get ahead?
This is not so much an event that’s about calling the future in, as it is about building the stepping stones towards it from a perspective of knowledge we already have, wisdom we already earned. But not all things in our past belong in our present, and some present things are more than temporary. Mercury in Cancer asks you quite literally what’s worth nurturing in yourself, in your life, in your relationships, and in your behavioral patterns… and what is meant for elimination.
Electrifying Change
Uranus in Gemini
So, Uranus is currently in Gemini, its own event that lasts 7 ½ years and happens every 84 years, which means this is likely the only one you’ll experience in your lifetime – if you are 18+ age, as you should be if you read this website (see Terms & Conditions you agreed to when entering the website). This event lasts from 2025 all the way to 2033. And this Mercury Retrograde plays a role here!
I’ll skip the astrological theory and get to the point: Uranus, the planet of sudden and electric events, accidents, surprises, and overall change (as well as technology and revolutions), brings all the afore-mentioned themes to these 3 weeks of Mercury Retrograde.
A.k.a.: Mercury Retrograde, which is already known for miscommunications, will make us more susceptible to misunderstanding/being misunderstood. So, make sure you communicate clearly and check what you and the person you fight with heard each other say before the conflict really gets going.
The same goes for issues with technology acting up (and sometimes, breaking): Uranus here amplifies the potential already inherent to Mercury Retrograde, making it stronger.
And Uranus also brings a much higher potential for large-scale change to this Mercury Retrograde: a.k.a., individually or collectively, this could become an interesting 3 weeks.
Change takes place.
You can read about Uranus in Gemini, which is linked here and at the end of the article.

Nurturing the Right Things & Emotional Regulation
This Mercury Retrograde is very much about figuring out which part of our lives, ourselves, our relationships, and our patterns deserve to be fed into – and how. This sounds a little odd at first blush: until you've dealt with children for a while (they’re great teachers at this). Allow me to take you through this as an example that you’ll later see applies to adults as well.
Sometimes, when a child has a problem, they absolutely require peak coddling and nurturance. Even if it doesn’t solve the problem itself, it helps them generate the capacity to deal with the issue and move through it.
Most of the time, children require a hug and some soothing words, and then the message: “Look at you, you made it through the challenge! Go you, you’re so strong. Now go play again.” A.k.a., nurturance mixed with the clear signal of: “drama’s over, problem’s solved. You’re good now.”
And sometimes, children literally need an adult to tell them: “Hey, this isn’t a big deal. I know you think it was, but actually, you’re all good!” Obviously, the latter isn’t appropriate in some instances – gaslighting children ain’t the goal here – but if a kid loses it because of a thing that doesn’t matter, it helps when someone explains to them that all is well, they are well, and nothing bad is happening: children are still learning how to judge and process reality. Sometimes, they need help from an adult who can see from the bird’s-eye-view they don’t have access to yet. And (since children aren’t developed enough to have the same capacity for emotional self-regulation as adults), they sometimes need help to regulate their own feelings after they get upset so they can calm down again. We’ll pick this up again in just a second.
Here’s the deal: while this applies to children, we as adults need that help as well sometimes – just to a far lesser extent and more rarely than kiddos do. There are times when we need someone else’s bird’s eye view so we can see that Argument With the Boss was actually not the thing that’ll get us fired, or that Scary Situation – while legitimately scary – is truly over and we can relax now. And sometimes, we just need a hug and someone to give us ice cream (or other comforts that feel good). When you get to a certain level of upset, you sometimes need care from someone else… or at the very least, special care from yourself.
Which leads me to my next point: we also provide this care towards ourselves: telling ourselves that X isn’t a big deal, deciding that Y requires us to take some time off and pour into ourselves, ruminating over Z because we’re upset, and trying to either solve or process what happened. All of that is fine.
But what if you’re mixing up these three responses of care – coddling, soothe-and-send-out-again, error-404-no-issue-found-you’re-good-actually – and use them in the wrong instances? Bad things.
Playing down an issue when it wasn’t an issue to begin with is helpful – but if it was an issue and continues to be a problem, pretending it’s “all good” is detrimental.
But if something is NOT an issue, and you coddle the person like they’re going through the worst thing you've ever witnessed, you’re not doing them any favors, either.
This is easiest to see in children. “Wow, that shallow scratch must hurt you so badly! I’m so sorry this happened! Are you okay? Are you really okay?! This is like, an inch long!” Tell that to a three-year-old, the kid that was doing fine and just wanted a band-aid, and they will start to cry (and likely think they’re dying). And not only that, if this is a pattern, they’ll learn that any small blemish is a Big Problem and respond accordingly, thus getting more upset than they need to be and hurting more emotionally than they need to during future minor problems.
Similarly (though less intensely), adults can go through this as well. Imagine someone keeps telling you that a situation that you can handle relatively calmly must “be so bad” and “actually nothing they would ever recover from,” and overall making a huge deal of it, and they don’t stop. Eventually, you’re going to feel a whole lot worse (and potentially more anxious) than you started out as well. Again – if there’s an actual issue you didn’t see that they’re warning you about, that’s fine. But if their “care” is just pouring gasoline over a candle flame, it won’t do good either. Making someone doubt themselves, their own capacity, or the fact that life can get better again can be a direct consequence of overly coddling people (in the wrong situations).
When it comes to yourself, feeding your own patterns of overly focusing on your own drama (when the problems have already been solved or aren’t that big objectively) can, with time, become problematic. (This is a pretty difficult balance for people who need to consciously and cognitively work through their issues because they need to understand to resolve… but there’s still a line between processing and regurgitation.) Obviously, this is much harder for some people than for others: but you get the gist.
What you nurture – and what’s nurtured inside you – grows with time. This Mercury Retrograde in Cancer is the moment to check what and how you nurture inside of yourself and decide what needs less feeding… and how you could do that.
It’s also a time to consider where you need more care: more rest, more food, more hugs from the people you love, more self-care, more time at home in your safe haven – more homey-ness so you have that safe haven to begin with.
As a next step, this Mercury Retrograde might also teach you (or society as a whole) what we need to nurture in others… and where we don’t want to do that in the wrong ways.

Home and Family
Cancer is the sign of the home and family – and the emotional heart, as well. Mercury Retrograde is a time when we hear the voice of the heart much more strongly and when themes around family and our physical home/places we feel at home are louder than usual. This is a great time for projects around the house (such as decluttering or re-decorating, or even buying things for the house that make you more comfortable: Mercury Rx can be a great time for getting deals, though it’s always wise to keep in mind that logistics, sales, and shipments can give you some trouble at this time. If you see a great deal, go for it – if you’d get your money back if they send you the wrong product, lose the shipment, or other big things happen.)
Communication with family members might also be highlighted – either in the form of in-depth conversations, for instance about the past or the things that really matter, or in the way of potential for miscommunication. Make sure you listen as much as you speak… and don’t be afraid to say what you need to say.
